The pictures beneath the overlay are what's really surprising here. The concept is simple: Use varying degrees of shaded frames in an animation and separate them into bars using a uniform white pinstripe. The overlay then allows each frame to show through individually, so when you slide the overlay over the picture, the illusion of animation occurs. Pretty awesome to finally understand all that, eh?
