For those of you who don't know your late night history, Jack Parr was the host of the Tonight Show from 1957-62 when it was still based in New York. He famously got into hot aqua for interviewing Fidel Castro, who is, miraculously, still among us. Parr was sharp as a tack and laid the groundwork for much of what the "modest, nicest young man" would do in his studio years later. (Yes, he's talking about Dave.)
Parr was a legend in the business and introduced all kinds of entertainers to American viewers. He can take credit for the Beatles, in a sense. (First footage, not performance.) Anyhow, in this clip he shows a young Letterman the amazing oddity behind a secret hidden door. We won't spoil the surprise, but we will say it foreshadows Fraggle Rock..
