Kanye West and Spike Jonze have worked together before on the video for Flashing Lights, so Jonze probably had firsthand knowledge that this role was a perfect fit for the egomaniacal musician. We Were Once a Fairytale requires nothing more of Kanye than to act like his notoriously drunk and arrogant self, at least for the first half or so. Then he starts cutting into his stomach and pulls out a cute, furry little demon. He finally "encourages" it to kill itself, begging the question "has Kanye West finally mastered his pride?"
