David Post will explain to you what the significance of the IP address is, so we'll skip the commentary on that. The issue at hand here is that the internet may be running short on IP addresses. The long and short is that if we have to rework a new version of the internet that will allow for a bunch more IPs, it will totally affect the entire internet. Imagine the difference between broadcast and digital television (which is set to switch over permanently later on this year) and you'll get an idea of the crisis described here.
