The mere mention of Ed Asner sent us scurrying to find a Mary Tyler Moore show clip, one with Lou Grant in full-on snarling curmudgeon mode. Bingo! After watching Grant snarf down a chocolate éclair, Mary tries to tactfully tell him that he’s getting fat. Grant, in return, tells Mary she has too many teeth. Three things are striking about this clip: (1) The scene is long enough to develop a premise, gain momentum and draw laughs from the characters, not an arbitrary punchline. (2) What constituted “fat” would now be considered waif-like. (3) There still is nothing hotter than watching Mary Tyler Moore bite into a French pastry. (by Patrick Sauer) Running Time: 5:38
