The Daily Tube review
This 1972 Tonight Show clip offers a whole lot goodness, starting with Carlin's woolly beard. The show was a lot shaggier as well, with Flip Wilson rambling on about Carlin's album for a full minute before he comes out on stage. Carlin then does a bit on Ed Sullivan. Yes, he did impressions. Carlin was becoming everyone's favorite countercultural crank, but he still had a toehold in the Rat Pack scene, and the juxtaposition is funnier than the material. It wraps up brilliantly with Carson reading his cue to hold up a beer and then doing an on-air for pitch for Budweiser, "the King of beers." Carlin, comedy, Carson and consumerism... Ain't that America?
