The Daily Tube review
It was a trio of worst-case scenarios that claimed the life of funny car driver Scott Kalitta on Saturday night in New Jersey. First, his car ignited during his second run on the track. Then, the safety chute failed to deploy. Finally, his car crashed head-on into the barrier at the end of the track, bursting into a ball of flame and killing Kalitta instantly. The news took the entire auto racing community by surprise, as fatal accidents always do, and led to a lot of speculation about the sport's present and future, including the discussion sparked here, in an ESPN clip that features footage of the crash itself around the 4:10 mark.
